Sgt. Zach T. Miller of Jim Thorpe passed the sergeant board of examination held at the U.S Army Installation at Fort Drum, New York. He received his promotion to sergeant effective April 1.

Sgt. Miller is currently assigned to Charlie Company Snipers, 3-71 Recon Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat team, 10th Mountain Division, United States Army.

Mathew Allen Gould of Lehighton graduated from boot camp, Parris Island, North Carolina, on July 10 with a "sharp shooter award."

His graduation was put on hold for a week having been bitten by a brown recluse spider.

He will continue his combat training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, for the next month, and then in Missouri for three months for his MOS training.

Attending his graduation were his mother Julie Hawk, his sister Haley Hawk, grandparents Huck and Linda Gould, and grandparents Bruce and Vera Kramer.

Moravian College, Bethlehem, has announced that the following local residents earned dean's honor list standing for the spring semester of the 2014-2015 school year. Students who carry three or more course units during a fall or spring term and attain a GPA for the term of 3.50 or higher are placed on the dean's honor list.

Kaitlyn Matula, daughter of Joseph and Kathleen Matula of Lansford, received academic honors at Alvernia University by making the university dean's list for the spring semester of 2015.

Matula is a sophomore majoring in business management with a minor in communications and economics.

She earned a 3.540 GPA for the spring semester.

To qualify for the dean's list, students must have a semester GPA of 3.50 or better and must be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours.

Courtney Getz

Courtney Getz, a student at West Chester University, and Richard Getz III, a student at Arcadia, have been named to the dean's list at their respective schools.

They are the children of Richard and Yvette Getz of Palmerton.

They are both graduates of Palmerton Area High School.

Dr. Karen Yarrish, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, announced the full-time students who have been named to the Keystone College president's, dean's, and honors list for the spring 2015 semester.

Full-time students who complete 12 credits and achieve a grade-point average of 4.00 are named to the president's list and students who complete 12 credits and achieve a grade-point average of 3.70 through 3.99 are named to the dean's list.

President's list: Michelle R. Patire, Albrightsville.

Dean's list: Joel E. Seyler, Slatington.

Laureen E. DiMattia of Lehighton graduated in May from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park.

She is the daughter of Mary Ann DiMattia and Peter DiMattia.

Laureen received a bachelor of arts in psychology and a minor in sociology. She was honored at a separate celebration the morning of graduation for attaining Highest Distinction (top 2 percent) of her class. She received a medal for her achievements. She was also on the dean's list all eight semesters at PSU.

Laureen will continue her education toward a master's of social work at Marywood University.
