Woman's Club

The members and guests of the Nesquehoning Woman's Club will open their season with a dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Parkview Inn in Summit Hill.

Please call Jane Pietruch with your reservation at 570-645-7846 before Sept. 1. Price includes dinner, tax and tip. Choice of entree includes broiled haddock, chicken cordon bleu, crab cakes or New York strip steak.

VFW Auxiliary

The annual picnic of the VFW Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 will be held on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. President Cheri Santore will host the picnic at her home on West Diaz Avenue.

All those members planning to attend should contact Maureen at 669-9578 so proper planning can be made. If you are planning to attend, bring a side dish.

Free recycling

Lansford will host a free electronics recycling day from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 26 at the Lansford Pool parking lot.

Tax office

The Coaldale tax office will be closed Monday through Aug. 3 to prepare school taxes for mailing.

Normal hours will resume Aug. 4

Office hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

If taxpayers qualify for exemption, please return your signed and dated application, in person, along with proof of eligibility. School exemptions must be notarized.

Golden Agers

The July 13 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with an Inspirational message. Singalong followed with summer songs by the group.

Members celebrating birthdays in May, June, July and August will be recognized at the Aug. 10 meeting. The subject of medical fraud will be addressed at a future meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John Slovak Lutheran Church Social Hall.

The Lansford Park and Recreation Board will offer swim lessons, taught by pool lifeguards, at the Lansford Community Pool during the last two weeks of July.

There will be four levels of classes.

Level 1 works on comfort in the water with the ultimate goal of independent doggie paddle. This is for the most basic and beginner swimmers.

Level 2 is for swimmers who already know how to doggie paddle. This is an introduction to basic stroke work and water safety.

Level 3 is an intermediate level that refines the basic strokes and water safety.

Meed's VBS

Meed's United Methodist Church will host its Vacation Bible School, Hometown Nazareth, from 9-11:30 a.m. Aug. 3-7.

There will be a planning meeting at 7 o'clock this evening. Volunteers are needed to help with snacks, crafts, games, music and story telling.

Everyone is welcome. Children ages 3 to 12 can attend the program. Registration can be done on Aug. 3 or at the children's lunch program.

Golden Agers

The June 22 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with "Prayer for My Dad" by Norma Lee Burke.

Ruth Ann Feane led the singing with summer selections. President Irene Hudasky conducted the meeting and also announced upcoming trips.

The next meeting will be Monday at St. John's Slovak Lutheran Church Social Hall Beginning at 1 p.m. Shirley Pavlick will inform the group about upcoming events. Bingo is scheduled to be played.

Summer band news

New Panther Valley High School Band members going to seventh and eighth grades in the fall are invited to the next summer marching band rehearsal on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the high school band room. Another rehearsal will be July 21 from 7 to 8 p.m. as well.

Band camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 6-18 at the high school.
