It's been nearly six weeks since the basketball season ended. It doesn't seem like it's been that long, but when I think about it - it has.
March 13th. 41 days ago. There is a reason I can remember that.
Three years ago I became the 8th grade boys' basketball coach at Pleasant Valley. In 2007-08, Coach Mike Wertman and I handled the 7th and 8th grade teams respectively. The last two years I have been lucky enough to coach with the 'Mayor of Brodheadsville' himself - Mr. Matty Gould.
Garth Lakitsky promises he will be bigger, stronger and better when he takes to the wrestling mat next season.
That's bad news for 215-pound wrestlers throughout the state.
As an 189-pounder this season, the Tamaqua Area High School junior demolished just about everyone in his path, racking up a record of 38-5 and disposing of 27 of his opponents by fall.
For an athlete to win a District 11 gold medal in any individual event, it's something special.
When that same athlete goes on to the PIAA State Championships and brings back medals in the events entered, it's even more special.
For Palmerton's Shea Solt, who was able to accomplish both feats this year, it earned her the right to be named TIMES NEWS Swimmer of the Year for the second straight time.
LEWISBURG - Shea Solt knew Saturday would be the final day of her high school swimming career. So she made it one of the best days of her career.
At the final day of the PIAA Class AA Swimming and Diving Championships, the Palmerton senior took fourth place in the 500 freestyle, the highest placing in her career in that event.
She earned a spot in the championship final by qualifying fourth in preliminaries with a time of 4:58.51, over three seconds faster than her qualifying time. She bettered that with a 4:56.91 in the final.
LEWISBURG The biggest stage is where Palmerton's Shea Solt performs her best.
For the second year in a row, Solt set a personal-best time and won a bronze medal in the PIAA Class AA 200-yard freestyle on Friday night at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
"Last year was my personal best which I came in with, which was a 1:53.10," Solt said. "I knew I wanted to get a high 1:51 or a low 1:52 and that's what I did."
OMAHA, Neb Northwestern graduate Scott Clymer must have had mixed feelings after the first day of the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.
The former Tiger and current Liberty University grappler experienced the thrill of winning his opening bout. But later in the day, Clymer not only suffered a crushing loss in his next match but also learned his brother, Ben, was eliminated from the tournament.
